SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR MINES ACROSS AFRICA

If managed poorly, mining can lead to environmental degradation, displaced populations and increased conflict

ABOUT US

70 years of sustainable development

support to mines and communities across Africa.

OUR

EVOLUTION

Tacmin Rafiki’s holding company was founded in 1996 by Sarel Blaauw with the specific emphasis to assist mining companies with sustainable economic solutions at open-pit mines through the provision of specialist mining, management, construction and technical services.

In 2014, Sarel Blaauw, who is also a holder of a private pilot’s licence for helicopters, founded a specialist air services company with the main emphasis on sustainable environmental solutions for open-pit mines through the provision of aerial surveys, mapping and impact assessments in support of minimising the impact that mines have on the environment.

During 2015 Tacmin’s specialist air services company formed a partnership arrangement with major owner and operator of a vast aircraft fleet who has been servicing the Oil, Gas and humanitarian air industries across Africa, a company that is also approved by the United Nations World Food Program.

In September 2015, the 193 united nations (UN) member states adopted “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda For Sustainable Development” which includes a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2015-2030

OUR

PURPOSE

In January 2016, A Preliminary Atlas – “Mapping mining to the sustainable development goals” was released to encourage mining companies of all sizes to incorporate relevant SDG’s into their business and operations, validate their current efforts and spark new ideas.

In August 2016, and given the ongoing commitment of the Tacmin Group of companies to sustainable development support for mines, a policy decision was made to commit to the United Nations “Mapping mining to the sustainable development goals”.

With a longstanding track record of economic and environmental sustainable support to mines, Tacmin’s air services subsidiary was restructured to include sustainable social solutions and appointed Dr. Tanya Robinson as CEO of the company which was renamed to Tacmin Rafiki (Swahili for “friend”)

Dr Tanya Robinson is a phenomenal researcher who obtained three doctorates in social work before the age of 36. She has shown an intense passion for contributing to society through empirical results and for proving through research that a difference can be made.
